Practical methods to become strong ally

Let's start with a following question. How confident do you feel stepping up as a trans ally in the workplace? How do we create by our daily actions an inclusive learning environment?

  • Understand that people face discrimination and exclusion because of their identity

  • Recognize the power they have to create change

  • Focus on your behavior towards other and think how can you in your daily actions create a more inclusive environment

  • During the process of Gender Reassignment you can be ally by offering yourself for a chat and providing verbal support. While doing that commit to be positive and active in supporting others.

  • Share your name and pronouns in email signatures or meetings and interview panels to show that you understand importance of pronouns

  • You can easily call people by their name, or by their preference, however if must you can use 'Mx' a gender-neutral title.

  • Correct each other when colleagues get things wrong. Don't let transphobia be part of the culture

  • Learn more about HR policies and employee support process and actively ask them to be more inclusive if needed

  • Learn more about LGBTQ terminology please visit here and upskill yourself by consuming information created by trans people, e.g. oestrogeneration

  • Celebrate trans people throughout the year, for example trans day of visibility (31 March) and non-binary people's day (14 July)

  • Please don't assume that trans people know everything about trans identities and experiences
